Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The macaw with gold and blue is an incredibly beautiful bird. Its stunning visual appeal is well-known. Its sociable personality makes it a great companion for families. It is also very good in its interactions, and can quickly learn new phrases and tricks.
Our own blue-and-gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello, apple, water, and more. The birds are able to live for more than 50 years.
Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a variety of members. They can get bored easily and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren’t interacting with them enough. Macaws that aren’t socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who love to play, interact and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but they are also a great companion for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting calls and screeches that can be annoying to those living in condos or apartments.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it’s essential that the pet’s owner is patient and realizes that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any issues with behavior.
Lolita’s care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the ocean.
lolita blue & Gold macaw‘s captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington’s westcoast, where she could spend the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation’s most active activists, including Ric O’Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium’s stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita’s Diet
As with any species of animal captive, a gold and blue macaw’s health is contingent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed is likely to live up to 60 years. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A golden and blue macaw is a delightful companion, but also intelligent. They are renowned for their ability to master new tricks and phrases quickly. This bird is ideal for those just beginning their journey into the avian species.
In addition the bird needs plenty of interaction and will bond with her human family members easily. Blue and gold macaws are known to have loud screams, including “flock call” as a part of their normal behavior. They may also squabble or chew at times, particularly when they are angry or bored. This type of behavior is expected by prospective pet owners.
Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on Lolita’s status and health, but there are still questions. Some experts, including Akromas, who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon every day, in addition to capelin, herring, and squid.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being critiqued for the quality of the food they feed killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many consider too small for her.
Lolita’s Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see that she is released back into the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling illness that has left her in a vulnerable state.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita’s current health. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is aging quickly and that her health is declining.
As her captor does not need to reveal this information, it’s unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play a role in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale who died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
